So you think you can vibe?

AI platforms are amazing at one thing they'll never put on the pricing page — teaching you learned helplessness. Here's how to break the spell.

by Nick

You just created an account with Lovable, Base44, v0, Replit, or one of the countless other "batteries-included" AI platforms, gave it a prompt, and watched it one-shot your app.

Hold the phone. Drop everything. Call your mom. You're a developer now.

And look — those platforms are genuinely amazing. They open people's eyes to how powerful AI has become, how low the bar has dropped from idea to working app, and they hand you that sweet, sweet dopamine hit of watching something from inside your head go live on the internet. That feeling is real, and it's wonderful, and everyone should get to feel it.

They're also really, really good at teaching people learned helplessness.

How the spell gets cast

It sneaks up on you. The platform manages the database, so you never learn what one actually is. It handles auth, so "log in with Google" stays a little piece of magic. It owns the deploy button, so "live on the internet" feels like something only they can do for you. Brick by brick, you get trained to believe the hard part is the part only the platform can handle — and that belief is precisely what keeps the subscription auto-renewing every month.

Sure, most of them will let you migrate your project off their platform. But why would you? Then you'd have to manage big scary databases, terrifying payment flows, and complicated authentication systems all by yourself.

Right?

Wrong. Stupidly, hilariously wrong.

None of that stuff is actually hard anymore — not with an AI doing the heavy lifting beside you. A database is a spreadsheet with superpowers. Auth is one tool and one prompt. A deploy is a single command. The scary words from the migration screen are just words, and you already know harder ones.

Meanwhile the platforms charge you a monthly subscription, plus token costs, plus hosting costs, plus whatever else they can bolt on — all for the privilege of never finding that out. And here's the kicker: the day you stop paying, your project goes with it. What happens to everything you've built if you cancel?

Here's the secret they'd rather you not have

You can get off the platforms entirely and own your whole stack — your AI, your domain, your database, your code, all of it — and you still don't have to think about the scary stuff.

You just have to learn two things: how to ask your AI the right questions, and how to lay the right foundation once. That's it. Do that, and you get the same magic you fell in love with — except now you own it. Cancel any subscription tomorrow and what you built keeps right on running, because nobody's holding it hostage.

It really isn't hard. The platforms are just betting on you never realizing how easy AI has made it.

That bet is the entire reason just vibe exists. We're here to teach you to cut out the middleman, go straight to the source, and build the thing you've been thinking about — on a stack that's yours.

f*ck it, we vibe.
